Activated Carbon in Gold Recovery (CIP/CIL Process)

The Carbon-In-Pulp (CIP) and Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) processes are the dominant gold extraction methods in mines across South Africa, Australia, Ghana, and the Americas. In these processes, activated carbon adsorbs gold-cyanide complexes from a slurry of crushed ore, concentrating the precious metal for stripping and electrowinning.

Semiconductor fabrication requires ultra-pure water (UPW) at resistivity levels above 18 MΩ·cm. Any trace contaminant including chlorine, organic compounds, or dissolved metals can ruin wafers worth millions. Activated carbon is a critical component in the pre-treatment of UPW systems, removing chlorine and chloramines that would otherwise damage downstream ion exchange resins and RO membranes.
